“It’s Just a Hobby” or “The Price of a Blue Ribbon”
Jan 4 - Bought a cute puppy from a guy who has some of the nicest dogs around. Pup was one of the best he had ever bred. Cost- $75.00
Jan 6 - Flowers for mother to make up for the spots on the rug and the broken ashtray. $7.50
Jan 10 - Vet bill -pup won’t eat. $10.
Jan 11 - Vet bill -pup is eating everything, including flowers and a dozen Hershey bars. $10.
Jan13 - Vet bill -$10. pup is constipated on No. 2 American cheese left by milk man.
Jan16 - Just found out pup hadn’t had any shots... $10. worm medicine was free.
Feb 2 - 2nd shot- $10. vet threw in vitamin pills, figured i was a potential GOLDMINE.
Feb 4 - Vet bill -pup ate 98 Vita-Pup Super Vitamins. $10.
Feb 20 - Vet bill, no problems I just missed him. $10.
Mar 1 - Dr Bill for my Mothers tranquilizers. $15.
Mar 10 - $7.50 dues, Joined Kennel Club
Mar 26 -First match, since they say it is so much fun and inexpensive, according to club members. We got 4th place in 4 to 5 puppy bitch class. Entry fee $1.50 Food $. Gas $5. Turnpike $2.20 Flat tire $10. Cost $21.70
Apr 10 -Rabies shot $10
Apr 11 - Vet bill- $10. Diarrhea from shot
Apr 28 - 2nd match, due to the fact that first was so inexpensive? It was fun despite the 3 inches of snow.... Cost $44.70 including the $28.70 for replacing back seat of car chewed to shreds. We got a 2nd.
May 1 - New crate to prevent the above $58.60
May 7 - $4,872.22 New station wagon as crate won’t fit in car.
May 18 - $20.00 to begin obedience school, gift from mother.
Jun 10 - 1st AKC show- because of small previous tastes of victory. No ribbons-nothing. In fact, pup stepped on bee going into ring and got excused. we watched and learned. $36.05
July 4 - 2nd AKC Show- We didn’t get a ribbon this time either. The judge doesn’t know a good puppy when he sees it... all other losers agreed.
July 18 - 3rd AKC Show- 4th in a 5 dog class$44.85 including $15. for a parking ticket. Whoever put that fire hydrant in the middle of a park ought to see a psychiatrist!
Aug 8 - Phone call to a Pro-handler to make arrangements to have pup shown to her fullest potential. $5.10
Aug 10 - Trip to handler. $15.60
Aug 28 - Big 2 show weekend for me and pup. Motel overnight, dinner for handler and me to discuss why pup did not place on Saturday.
Aug 29 - Sunday, didn’t place again, hurried home before the tornado. will call handler. He’s too busy anyway. Cost 99.80 matches are cheaper!
Aug 30 - Phone call to handler, seem pup lacks spirit he believes. However she’ll make a nice brood bitch.
Aug 31 - Trip to handler to pick up the pup. handler’s performance and board. $7.50
Sept 1 - Bill for pledges and catalog ads for kennel Club Annual Show. $20.
Sept 16 - Annual Specialty show, will try again... no placing. $13.50
Oct 20 - The National Specialty... everyone who is anybody goes, so here I go again. Really an experience to watch the parent club in action. After seeing top dogs decided she’ll be better off in Obedience. Cost $280.00
Oct 25 - $42.50 for jumps and obedience equipment and re-enrollment to school.
Nov 10 - First AKC Obedience trial! Got a green ribbon, 26th place, not bad for a beginner. $18.
Nov 28 - New shoes, wore out old ones practicing my heeling! $9.59
Dec 17 - Need one more leg! Stayed in motel so pup will be on time and well rested. Cost $48.30 including one raw steak, because pup got CD, green ribbon and a BLUE ONE! We got first place!!
Dec 23 - Kennel Club Christmas Dinner, $10.50
Dec 25 - One Ball, one rubber ducky, one package of chew bones. Pup believes in Santa Claus.
Jan 4 - Bought one cute little puppy. Show quality etc. Cost $400.00
My Blue Ribbon cost me $7,804.00. I realize now that this is just a hobby with me...I don’t go whole hog, it was all just for fun!!
